Judo

Judo is a Japanese Martial Art which is well known as an Olympic sport.  Derived from the older Ju-Jitsu, Judo has dropped the dangerous striking maiming and killing techniques retaining mainly the throws and locks for which Judo is famous.  Although Judo can be freely translated as the "gentle art" there is no mistaking the ferocity and power generated by an experienced Judo practitioner when applying a particular technique.  If in doubt as to the effectiveness of this gentle art one can take an introductory class at a local Judo club.  In our club we teach the basic Judo principles and the main throws.  The purpose of this is to give students an understanding of what its like to be thrown about and roll on a mat.  We encourage our students to take up Judo to augment their karate techniques.  Exposure to Ju-Jitsu can also be greatly beneficial especially the techniques relating to locks, dislocations, and ground work.  The keen martial arts students should try exposing themselves to a variety of martial arts as they all have benefits for everyone.  In-depth study of martial arts can be a rewarding lifelong endeavor for those fascinated with the human body and mind and the methods of employing them as weapons.  The serious students will also reap other rewards which they can use in their daily life, such as health, focus, co-operation, flexibility etc.
