Master Miyagi teaching Saifa

Karate is the generic name applied to Japanese Martial Arts which specialise mainly in defending and attacking using the hands and feet as primary weapons.  There are many different styles of Karate, however they are all very similar especially at the higher levels.  Kata, prearranged fighting techniques, are the heart of karate.  Watching a karateka perform a kata one can tell what style they practice.  In our school we teach mainly the SHOTOKAN style which was created by master Gishin Funakoshi in the early 1920s.  Shotokan karate is identified by strong long stances with powerful blocks and linear attacking techniques.  In addition we teach some kata from the GOJU style which was created by Master Chojun Miyagi.   Goju karate is identified by soft/hard, slow/fast circular techniques and shorter stances.   Shotokan kata taught are Taikyoku I,II,III Pinan I,II,III,IV,V, Tekki, Bassai Dai and Kanku Dai.  Goju kata taught are Saifa, Yansu, Tensho and Sanchin.  At the black belt level students choose and study from a set of advanced Shotokan kata such as Enpi, Jion, Jiin, Sochin etc.
